Seed Management Services
Seed Management Services (SMS) is a Greening Australia (WA), Avon regional program that is funded by NHT through ongoing support from the Avon Catchment Council (ACC). The traditional aims of SMS are to, 'achieve a sustainable and ethical native seed supply to support the strategic directions of Greening Australia (WA)'. The aims of the SMS program have altered over time as the program has changed its focus from that of seed collection, processing and storage to that of providing improved management methods and processes to ensure the sustainable use of native seed. The SMS team has recently published and distributed a 'Seed Situation Statement for the Avon River Basin'. The Statement outlines what current resources, management issues, R&D gaps, and future directions need to be considered for the improved and sustainable management of native seed resources in the region. This statement has identified a strong need for National and State processes to better manage native seed resources. However due to the regional strategy process, investment in further work has had to occur at a regional project level. The presentation will focus on the application of recommendations emanating from the Seed Situation Statement to their development through on-ground regional projects. It is from these on-ground Avon projects that improved systems and mechanisms for improved native seed management will ideally be developed and made available across other Avon, State and National projects. These native seed management methods and tools in development through Avon regional project delivery will be outlined in the presentation.
