Secrets of successful tree establishment
The Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) has asked Ensis to develop guidelines to assist successful establishment of environmental plantings for carbon sequestration, especially in the context of a changing climate. The project aims to improve tree survival in general, but particularly to increase the resilience of tree plantations to a more variable climate through better establishment techniques. In the first stage of the project the team has reviewed books, booklets and scientific papers on tree establishment, and interviewed many experienced tree planters. We are also keen to learn what conference attendees consider are the most important factors for successful establishment. In the second stage, that has just begun, we will develop a set of national, as well as regionally specific, guidelines relevant to the ten regions used by Greening Australia. Therefore, information on establishment techniques used in different regions is of particular interest.
