A farmer’s journey to holistic management

Coming to Allendale, Boorowa, NSW south-west slopes in 1971, after jackarooing in the NSW Riverina and the western districts of Victoria, a journey of change from high production agriculture to a more reflective conservation ethic began. The search led to whole farm planning, zero till cropping, direct seeding of trees, salinity management, rotational grazing, some academic study of sustainable agriculture and, more recently, using the Holistic Management decision making process to move towards a vision for the people, production and a future landscape that can be self regenerating into the long distant future. Future energy considerations and soil carbon sequestration under grasslands are current interests.
