Corangamite Seed Supply & Revegetation Network – Lifting the stakes on revegetation and seed supply
The seed was plump, clean and local. Fortunately, the seed bank had managed to stockpile some seed over the last three years. Joanne collected over several seasons but it wasn't everything Bill needed. She had been selective. The right provenance just wasn't available for some species. It didn't matter. Bill would supplement with seedlings in later years anyway. Coral at the nursery was already organising Bill's requirements for next year. The plant list from Andy at the agency had been quite extensive - some species to direct seed now, others to plant later. All carefully chosen through historic notes, database records and local knowledge of the remnants. The ground was perfect now - good weed control and moist soil. Bill would be on the tractor most of the day. He took some photos and smiled confidently. Some light rain was expected in the next few days. He would take some more shots in a couple of months as he checked the new seedlings with Andy. Bill leaned on the post. It was just chocolate plough lines now but with concentration, he could faintly see the skeleton of a woodland about to be seeded. It's what we aim for - enthusiastic landholders, a reliable supply of appropriate seed and plants, support by skilled coordinators and extension staff, backed up by the latest research. And all through the process: a committed and vibrant network achieving long term biodiversity gains and best practise in on-ground works. We are striving to achieve it. Communication is active. Field training and research forums are well attended. . Seed is quality tested. Project records are improving. Interest has sparked in seed production, direct seeding and new products. Connections are made and the notes to address the information gaps are still growing.
