Australian Government

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)

DAFF and DEH jointly administer the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) (http://www.nht.gov.au) and the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) (http://www.napswq.gov.au). A number of vegetation-related publications can be downloaded from the website, including the Compendium of Vegetation Management in Australia. The Compendium includes national strategies, guidelines and initiatives that have an impact on vegetation management and monitoring. DAFF also administers the National Landcare Program.

Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH)

The DEH website provides a range of vegetation-related information, and hosts the Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN). ERIN provides access to a number of databases relevant to vegetation management, including the Native Vegetation Information System (NVIS) and the Australian Biodiversity Information Facility (ABIF). A number of publications, including the SoE 2001 report, can be downloaded (http://www.deh.gov.au/about/publications/list.html). BUSH magazine, which considers the role native vegetation management plays in farming, can be viewed on-line. Links are also provided to a range of vegetation-related websites.

Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO)

The AGO, part of the DEH, delivers most programs under the Australian Government’s climate change strategy. The AGO is facilitating Greenhouse Action to Enhance Sustainability in Regional Australia by developing information and tools to support the protection and enhancement of greenhouse sinks. This activity builds on the previous Bush for Greenhouse Program in developing carbon accounting, legal and administrative guidance to facilitate investment in multiple-benefit revegetation and plantations. A range of fact sheets and other publications can be downloaded from the website.

Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG)

ANBG aims to increase knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of Australia’s plant heritage through its scientific collection of living and herbarium specimens of Australian plants. The Gardens are home to a large resource of botanical information relevant to Australian plants, made available to the public through several large databases on the website:

  • The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) lists all the scientific names used for Australia’s plants and is managed and updated by the Australian National Herbarium, Australian Biological Resources Study and the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
  • What’s its Name? is an concise database of current correct scientific plant names for Australia.
  • The Living Plants in the Gardens database allows users to search the living collection of the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
  • The Australian Plant Image Index is a comprehensive collection of photographs consisting of identified Australian plant species and a large number of environmental and conservation images.

Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS)

BRS is the scientific bureau within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). BRS provides nationally-focused scientific advice to support evidence-based policy development and decision-making by government. The Bureau’s Forest and Vegetation Sciences Program analyses forest and vegetation data and reviews forest management systems and performance to facilitate industry development and encourage ecologically sustainable forest and vegetation management. The BRS website contains research publications, on-line data tools and mapping facilities, and on-line databases, including the Australian Natural Resources Data Library (ANRDL), the Plantation Information Network (PIN), the National Plantation Inventory, the National Forest Inventory (NFI), Integrated Vegetation On-line, and the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS).

Murray-Darling Basin Commission (MDBC)

MDBC has a charter to promote and co-ordinate effective planning and management for the equitable, efficient and sustainable use of water, land and environmental resources for the Murray–Darling Basin. Key vegetation-related research projects include:

  • Landmark Project is focusing on sustainable land use in dryland agricultural regions of the Murray-Darling Basin. Landmark aims to identify, assess and map current land use and current recommended management practices for dryland agriculture against a range of sustainability criteria.
  • Watermark Project is a group of projects funded by the MDBC that aims to make a significant contribution to the strategic development of sustainable irrigation practices in the Murray-Darling Basin.
  • Heartlands is closely linked to Landmark, and aims to design and achieve socially acceptable land use change in selected focus catchments and to monitor its effectiveness in alleviating environmental degradation. Many MDBC publications and reports can be downloaded from the website or ordered on-line.

Vegetation-related publications can be downloaded in PDF format from the website.

National Land & Water Resources Audit (NLWRA)

NLWRA manages the Australian Natural Resources Atlas (‘the Atlas’), an internet-based ‘one-stop-shop’ for information on Australia’s natural resources. The Atlas provides summary data and information at National, State and regional scales and the full Australian Native Vegetation Assessment 2001 report. Audit Phase II (2002–07) will build on existing data, maps and information. Its Strategic Plan 2 is available on the website.
