Mapping technologies are becoming more sophisticated and precise. Remotely-sensed data, for example, are available at higher (spatial) resolution and with greater coverage. The accessibility and ease-of-use of these data continues to improve rapidly. The trend in portable (digital) mapping technologies is towards cheaper and miniaturised equipment that can be used interactively on one platform. For example, hand-held equipment is available to precisely map the location of vegetation. It will be important to test the range of applications that these new technologies can play in helping meet regional management goals. As the price continues to fall, it is expected that the rate of adoption and broader application of these technologies will improve.

| Public research agencies such as Geoscience Australia and groups such as the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (http://www.crcsi.gov.au) are developing new mapping technologies that can be used to support catchment management. Keep well informed of the latest developments by accessing the websites and related information networks of these groups. |
