The recent review, Adaptive Management: A synthesis of current understanding and effective application questioned the ability of adaptive management to contribute to ecological knowledge. It pointed out that adaptive management is most appropriate for some ecological questions, such as the management of long-lived organisms and ecosystems, but project objectives will need to be carefully formulated. Two projects conducted under Land & Water Australia’s Social and Institutional Research Program have evaluated and outlined different monitoring and evaluation methodologies. Evaluation of Producer Initiated and Managed R&D would be useful for land owners and producers who are considering involvement in a producer-initiated research project, while Participatory Research Methodologies in NRM describes the advantages and disadvantages of participatory research.

The Murray-Darling Basin Commission has developed a basin-wide Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy designed to monitor and report on the region’s natural resources. Information collected through this monitoring will be used in basin-wide planning, including the Sustainable Rivers Audit. For land managers and producers some of the Commission’s publications from this process are relevant to monitoring native vegetation.
