Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

Research and Development Corporations

“ working to improve market access, building demand for Australian red meat and conducting research and development (R&D) to provide competitive advantages for the industry”
About
Meat & Livestock Australia Limited (MLA) is a producer-owned company that provides services to the entire Australian red meat industry including producers, processors, exporters, live exporters and retailers.

The research arm of MLA supports the marketing effort using processes that seek to continually improve the product.

Research and development projects are the key to innovation in livestock production and in processing and product development. The research is primarily focused on industry and market development, but MLA also contains a number of programs directed towards assisting NRM.
Programs
Meat and Livestock Australia provides research and development, market information and marketing to benefit the red meat industry.

Sustainable Grazing Systems
This program was established in 1996 to address issues of declining productivity and sustainability in grazing systems of the high rainfall zone in southern Australia. SGS engaged 9,839 producers in activities or information about grazing, pasture and natural resource management practices in the high rainfall zone of southern Australia. The final report for this project can be ordered from MLA or an executive summary downloaded from their website.

Towards Sustainable Grazing
The Towards Sustainable Grazing package is the culmination of the Sustainable Grazing Systems (SGS) project. The Professional Producers Guide is a collection of best farming practices including guides to management of grazing, soil, water resources, pastures, weeds, biodiversity and market specifications. This is available to purchase from MLA. The website also has several tips and tools available as downloads.

Partners and Collaborative Programs
The SGS program was supported by Land and Water Australia, NSW Agriculture, NRE Victoria, Agriculture WA, Murray Darling Basin Commission and the University of Melbourne, along with agencies, sponsors and producers from across the high rainfall zone of Australia.

Products
The Meat and Livestock Association website has several online databases to access publications, and research and development material.

MLA's range of natural resource management Tips & Tools provide practical information sheets designed to deliver the outcomes of research and development to producers in an on-farm 'how to' format. Featured areas include:

• Managing ground cover to reduce run-off and water loss
• Encouraging biodiversity benefits
• Encouraging birds on your farm
• Increasing earthworms in pastures
• Natural vegetation 1: Assessing the condition of remnant vegetation
• Natural vegetation 2: Improving the value of remnant vegetation
• Natural vegetation 3: Revegetating the farm

In order to purchase from some of these sites you will need to register with MLA. They also have links to free publications for both members and non-members.
