Tropical Savannas Management CRC

Cooperative Research Centres

“to help ensure that this vast area is healthy and managed to provide long-term benefits (economic, aesthetic, social and cultural) to those who use them and to sustain the biodiversity and habitat endemic to them”
About
The Tropical Savannas CRC research program is driven by the need to make tropical savanna research more useful to research users.

The motivation for doing so is that there are and will continue to be, increasing pressures to develop and intensify the use of natural resources in northern Australia. This will come from both entrepreneurial investment and existing enterprises wishing to increase productivity; and it is far less costly in public and private terms to maintain and protect the environment than it is to renew and restore it after it has been degraded.
Programs
The Centre has a linking approach to research. The research program is organised around four integrated themes rather than different research disciplines or sectors. The themes are:

• Landscape Ecology & Health;
• Industry & Community Natural Resource Management;
• Regional Planning & Management; and
• Human Capability Development.

Partnerships or Collaborative Programs
The Tropical Savannas CRC is an unincorporated joint venture established by an Agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and the partners listed below. These include: universities, government land management agencies, representatives of the pastoral industry and Indigenous land managers.

Products
The Tropical Savannas CRC administers a number of web-based databases/tools. For example Savanna Explorer allows you to view summaries on the region’s natural systems and land management issues. Savanna Search is an extensive database of thousands of research papers, reports, manuals and books about the savanna region in Australia. Savanna Map Maker allows you to view and create maps of vegetation, soils and land use in the savannas. Information on these products is at: www.savanna.cdu.edu.au. New fire information website, North Australia Fire Information, has the latest hotspot data on fires across northern Australia: www.firenorth.org.au
