Schol of Environmental Science The School's mission is "To excel in pure and applied research and teaching in environmental science; to disseminate knowledge and research results that can help in resolving environmental problems; and to serve community needs."
The School’s research areas encompass our seven major themes: air, land, water, biota, people, policy and technology. Most school staff are members of University Areas of Research Strength, namely Ecosystem Management and Restoration, and Technologies and Policies for Sustainable Development. Specific topics include:
environmental impact assessment policy and law environmental management environmental technology ecosystem management and restoration marine, estuarine and wetland ecology mine-site rehabilitation nature-based tourism and nature conservation management pollution control.

Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy The ISTP was established in 1988 to help create a better understanding of the roles and effects of science and technology for the benefit of all sectors of society. The ISTP has grown to become Australia’s leading research institute for sustainability and one of the largest in the world. Marine and Freshwater Research Laboratory The Marine and Freshwater Research Laboratory incorporates a fully equipped, NATA accredited facility for the analysis of fresh, estuarine and marine samples. Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture CLIMA is a research alliance between the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia, The University of Western Australia, CSIRO and Murdoch University, formed to apply leading edge science to the problems and priorities identified by the Western Australian grain and pasture legume industries.
