RIVER RECOVERY

YOUR RIVERS YOUR FUTURE

Greening Australia’s River Recovery program is creating partnerships with visionary business leaders, scientists, community-based organisations and government agencies to save our  rivers in crisis.

We have ignored our rivers' critical value and now many of our fresh water systems are at risk. Nearly 22,000 kilometres of Australia’s rivers andstreams are in urgent need of repair*. River Recovery targets these rivers.  (* National Land and Water Resources Audit)

Together we will work to:

  • Protect our most valuable river sites
  • Stop the erosion of our river   banks and improve the quality of water in our river systems
  • Remove the weeds and pests that are choking the river systems
  • Bring back our natural river habitat by re-establishing native plants
  • Fence important watercourses while still making sure that our stock have watering sites.

These actions lay the foundation for our ecosystems to recover.  Your involvement will be the first critical step in restoring the health of our rivers.

The first phase of River Recovery focuses on nine key Australian rivers in need of repair.  Riparian restoration will occur on a wider scale as more businesses and individuals invest in River Recovery.

RIVER RECOVERY FOUNDING PARTNERS

Alcoa World Alumina has joined with Greening Australia as a founding alliance member for River Recovery, and the Australian Government has provided $2.9 million of catalytic funding for the first phase of the program. This funding is part of the Natural Heritage Trust, the Australian Government’s $3 billion investment to help communities restore and conserve Australia’s environment and natural resources.

Greening Australia is working to leverage the Natural Heritage Trust funds to build a greater pool of resources for wide-scale riparian restoration. This will be done by securing the support and networks of Australian research organisations, businesses, and individuals.
